For the umpteenth time a group of over 20, members and former members of the canoe section plus their families took over the Dufton Youth Hostel in the Eden valley last weekend. The usual format was followed, loads of fresh air, exercise, food and booze – but no canoeing! Weather conditions were generally cold but otherwise varied from the bright and breezy to the downright horrible.........

Not the best conditions to start the 2015 Hare 'n Hounds Season, but a big well done to everyone that braved the River Dee for the first race of the season. We had a good turnout despite the height of the river, the snow on the ground, and the 1 degree temperature ... but the sun was shinning and everyone was enthusiastic. After a debate on the side we decided it would'nt be safe to race the usual format due to the conditions so no points will be allocated. We paddled up to Eccleston which took around 45mins and just raced back to the Club House, when you see the times you can see how fast the river was flowing!

We started at 30 second intervals, scratch paddlers off first. David and Jake paddled very well to catch Cameron up in the final straight, with David just winning in the final push. Helen 4th paddled well, loving the tricky conditions in her sea kayak. James Wingfield came 5th, good to see him from DPC, followed by Jean, Ray, Bob, and Graham, with Parky in his WWR bringing up the rear.

We also had 3 junior boys doing a short time trial, well done to James 1st, Lewis 2nd, and Joe 3rd.

So well done to all paddlers for embracing the elements, big thanks to helpers in the soup kitchen Tracy, Carol and Jean for the soup... and to Ian and Jess for Time keeping ... despite no points being alocated, we did have a lovely frosty, blue bird sky morning on the river!

It was decided for future Races if the River levels are high again (ie: up to the club house wall) The Hare 'n Hound Race would not take place, in its original format. Depending on the standards of paddlers who turned up a Winter Ferry Trial or group session would be organized.

Thanks again Everyone Jean

Race objectives/target races for the New Year We will encourage as many paddlers as possible to do NW Haslers so we can race at the Hasler Finals, Sprint Regattas and the National marathon Championships. We also hope to have a strong Cheshire Ring Team, and will want to try and break that record, having been so close last year!

If you have any other Races you would like to encourage Chester Paddlers to do please let me know and I will add them to our Calender ... if you want a copy of the calender please download the link below ....thanks Jean
